QC Co-Lab Introduction to C/C++ Microcontroller Programming

Posted on February 5, 2011 by contact

Robots? Check. UAVs? Check. Model Trains? Check. Creepy walking things to scare your girlfriend? Check.

Microcontrollers are the marvel of the modern world. With a mastery of these devices you can program anything to do anything anytime for any reason. At the QC Co-Lab’s 6 week intro to micro-controller workshop you will learn to operate one of the most popular hobby micocontrollers available today. The Arduino Uno is cheap, powerful and well supported in the community. You will learn the basics of C/C++ programming, as well as get hands on experience designing and creating the project of your choice.

Classes start at 7:30 PM on Friday nights for six weeks, starting February 11th. Bring your own Arduino or buy one from us for $30. Class is free for members, and we recommend a $5 per session donation for non-members.

ReMade Aims to Bring the Maker Movement Mainstream Again

Posted on October 18, 2010 by contact

As we were planning our grand opening event, I received an e-mail from a guy named Chris. Chris talked to me about a documentary he and several other people were filming, and they wanted to come to the QC Co-Lab to feature our space. Not one to turn down free publicity, it was an easy choice to give them the green light. I had no idea what kind of professionalism, enthusiasm, not to mention being right cool people. That iPhone 4 wielding video crew was Electromagnate (@electromagnate,http://www.electromagnate.com)

Armed with steady cam mounts and tripods that work with Apple’s latest phone and a desire to shed light on a rapidly growing ethos, the crew of Electromagnate is working their tails off in order to tell their story. Their documentary, “ReMade: The Rebirth of the Maker Movement,” aims to reveal that we don’t have to live in such a disposable society, and that your local technophiles not only can, but would love to give back to their community, and society as a whole.

Electromagnate could use your help though. They need people that care to have their story told to help them on their quest to travel across the country to various makerspaces, hackerspaces and events, as well as purchase some new equipment to finish recording. They’ve set up a Kickstarter project where you can hear a message from them, view the current teaser trailer, and donate to their cause HERE (http://kck.st/dszYbf). For your generosity, Electromagnate will thank you with a present based on your donation.

Grand Opening was so awesome I couldn’t make a blog post until now…

Posted on September 29, 2010 by contact

It’s already been a week and a half and no one’s posted about Grand Opening week? Oh what, that’s MY job? Sheesh… And I suppose you want to hear all about it too, don’t you? I’m not surprised, it was pretty awesome.

Overall at the QC Co-Lab grand opening, we had people from 4 neighboring hackerspaces come visit, a documentary crew filming everything, cool talks ranging from cloning DNA and home hydroponics to establishing a web presence and changing how we learn today, impromptu soldering workshops, tweet-displyaing Apple II’s, fire and brimstone, and excitement galore.

I’d like to take a little time to say thanks to everyone who made the grand opening a success. I really couldn’t have wished for a more successful kick-start for our facility, and I know a lot of people who put in a lot of time, sweat, effort, expertise, and ingenuity to get us here today.

We’ll be working on compiling the video taken from the talks here in the next couple weeks. The Picasa page should have pictures from the grand opening events posted. If you have shots you’d like to contribute, please upload them at drop.io/qccolab_go and I’ll be sure to add them to the rest. You can upload video there as well.

So… a lot of crazy things happened, but that’s just the beginning. If you missed it, or would like to come around to the Co-Lab to hang out, and/or if you’re interested in membership, our next meeting is Saturday, October 9th, at 1 PM. We’d be glad to see you there!

Grand Opening Friday – Flame On!

Posted on September 17, 2010 by contact

If you ever wanted to know what 1800 degree (F) bronze looks like, the QC Co-Lab is the place you want to be. David Hinkle (Twitter: @drachs1978) constructed a blast furnace and used it to liquify bronze ingots for sandcasting coins. Tonight’s firing was a dry (or maybe molten) run, and a complete success. Hopefully tomorrow our MakerBot will produce a mold fine enough for use in casting a QC Co-Lab coin! Now if that doesn’t signify a great first day of a grand opening, I don’t know what does.

In addition, we had solder kits from Adafruit and Makershed, which were a big hit. A neighboring makerspace visitor showed up as well, Jonathan Barclay (Twitter: @jtbarclay) from Twin Cities Maker. Hopefully more of our hackerspace bretheren show up tomorrow.

We’re very excited to have all our speakers tomorrow, and to kick this thing off officially with our ribbon cutting ceremony. If you want to see the schedule of events, head on over to the Grand Opening page. Can’t wait for tomorrow, and see you soon!
