As we were planning our grand opening event, I received an e-mail from a guy named Chris. Chris talked to me about a documentary he and several other people were filming, and they wanted to come to the QC Co-Lab to feature our space. Not one to turn down free publicity, it was an easy choice to give them the green light. I had no idea what kind of professionalism, enthusiasm, not to mention being right cool people. It’s already been a week and a half and no one’s posted about Grand Opening week? Oh what, that’s MY job? Sheesh… And I suppose you want to hear all about it too, don’t you? I’m not surprised, it was pretty awesome. Overall at the QC Co-Lab grand opening, we had people from 4 neighboring hackerspaces come visit, a documentary crew filming everything, cool talks ranging from cloning DNA and home hydroponics to establishing a web presence and changing how we learn today, impromptu soldering workshops, tweet-displyaing Apple II’s, fire and brimstone, and excitement galore. Grand Opening Friday – Flame On!

If you ever wanted to know what 1800 degree (F) bronze looks like, the QC Co-Lab is the place you want to be. David Hinkle (Twitter: @drachs1978) constructed a blast furnace and used it to liquify bronze ingots for sandcasting coins. Tonight’s firing was a dry (or maybe molten) run, and a complete success. Hopefully tomorrow our MakerBot will produce a mold fine enough for use in casting a QC Co-Lab coin! Now if that doesn’t signify a great first day of a grand opening, I don’t know what does.
